Boat Trips

From time to time some Thistle members get together to charter boats or get afloat on their own boats locally.

Charters are arranged by individuals, are not organised by the Club, but crews are usually drawn from clubmembers who enjoy boating and share costs.

North Norway 9th August 2017

Breaking with a 10yrs + tradition, the 2017 trip will try a different centre. Boats and accommodation have been booked for Torsvag Havfiske. This trip is now fully subscribed.

Shetland Sept 2012

For the second 2012 trip to Shetland eight members sought to build upon the success of the previous excursion. This time we chartered the MV Kaillee, again enjoying two days of some of the best mixed fishing many of us have experienced. Davie Cran, Doug Dawson, Tomas Naruskevicius, Glen McIntyre, Dean Tate, Mike Sunley, Andy Kemp and Bob Blocksidge all recorded personal bests.

Saturday saw skipper Kevin and crew working hard around the Muckle Flugga area to take quality cod, pollack and coalfish and the day ended with new club records for each, with some records broken several times during the day. We also tried our luck for haddock and turbot, but could not contact any. Not that Tomas was complaining - it was during our attempts over turbot grounds that he got a two-cod hook-up which included one which broke the longstanding cod record with a magnificent fish of 14.50kg (almost 32lb). The day ended with Davie holding a new coalfish record (9.2kg) and Andy with a record pollack at 7.52kg.

On Sunday we fished the submarine wreck where everyone caught quality ling, before moving to nearby areas where other species were taken. The re-breaking of club records continued, with several ling around the 20-30lb mark. The biggest - but not by much - was Andy's fish of 15.40kg. Andy also completed his trio of club records by breaking Davie's day-old record with a coalfish of 10.06kg.

Those present all voted the trip a success, despite cost and travel hassles, and are keen to see further expeditions take place. As the details of what's on offer evolve future trips are likely to involve different arrangements and costs, but we know that there is no comparable fishing to be had elsewhere in the UK so are researching dates and travel options. Shetland June 2012

Mike Sunley, Bob Blocksidge and Andy Kemp trailed to Shetland to fish the Northmavine Charters MV Kailee. Fishing the Muckle Flugga area and a nearby wreck (a WW2 submarine) we had hard-fighting coalfish, cod and ling over two days. During the trip we saw local anglers take ling to 38lb, saithe to 26lb and cod to almost 20lb.

Conditions were rough on both days, making the 2.5hrs journey to the marks and back a challenge, but the fishing was frantic on most drifts. Club records were broken, then re-broken several times. On day one all fish were dropped into the boat's hold, and it was only on day two that we kept our fish separate for weighing.
